NPU Green Efforts Solar

In an industry based on paper signatures and proper documentation, you would think being green would not be the easiest thing, but Notary Public Underwriters has made it a priority to be more environmentally friendly.

In an industry based on paper signatures and proper documentation, you would think being green would not be the easiest thing, but Notary Public Underwriters has made it a priority to be more environmentally friendly. We believe being ecologically friendly can also be economically viable. We are fully committed to reducing our carbon footprint and building a sustainable earth.

Energy Efficient

In May 2007, we installed a 25kW solar Photovoltaic system that powered 33% of the business’ energy needs and saved 27 tons of coal from being burned each year. A new 50kW array was installed in 2018 which now powers a combined total of 100% of the business’ energy needs, saving over 88 tons of coal from being burned each year.

All of our lighting is energy efficient. We switched our bulbs to LEDs which use about 50% less energy than traditional incandescent, fluorescent or halogen bulbs. Additionally, we employ motion sensors to help reduce unnecessary light use.

All of the windows in our building are covered in heat blocking window film to help reduce the indoor temperature and allow our air conditioning units to run more efficiently. Speaking of our A/C units, they utilize special programming to regulate start times. This prevents a great surge of energy demand all at once.

The machinery we employ in the office like our laser engraver and industrial folder have been programmed specifically to be more energy efficient.

By incorporating smart strips at each work station, the NPU staff was able to stem electrical current flow when not in use.

Products and Shipping

Where possible, we’ve switched to digital forms instead of printing. When we do print, we recycle, shredding all sensitive information ahead of time.

By using biodegradable packing peanuts in the 75,000 products we ship each year we are able to prevent 360 cubic feet of solid waste from ending up in our environment annually.

All stamps manufactured from our supplier, TRODAT, are completely free from harmful heavy metals such as zinc, calcium or lead which may be harmful to the environment.

 Recycling

At Notary Public Underwriters, we make a conscious effort to recycle paper, cardboard, aluminum, light bulbs, batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, and computer components. Our recycling efforts save 13 tons of paper, 560 pounds of aluminum, and 6 tons of cardboard from entering a landfill each year.

Nature

In order to prevent precious downstream water from being polluted and soil from eroding, we built 3 on-site rain gardens around our building, in addition to the required storm run-off pond. This stops pollutants from traveling downstream by allowing the water to percolate directly into the ground.

By our green efforts, Notary Public Underwriters proves that even the small steps can make an impact in the long run. Join in our mission to be more environmentally clean. One simple step you can do at home is to adjust your thermostat higher or lower, depending on the season, when you’re not at home. This can conserve energy and also save you money, too!
