This involves meeting people at their home and traveling continuously for your job. notary road safety Here are some tips on how to stay protected during your travels as a mobile notary: Let someone know where you are going. It’s probably never a good idea to head off to meet a stranger without someone knowing where you are going. Let a roommate, spouse, friend, or family member know the name of the client as well as the location you are meeting. Meet in public places. Cafés and book shops make for good meeting places—they are common and can be found near wherever is convenient for the signer. Find out their appearance, and let them know yours. Going to meet someone blind to what they look like can be difficult. You are more likely to miss each other, or spend unnecessary time searching. A nice way to have a better idea of who you are meeting is to ask them what color shirt they are wearing that day or if they wear glasses. If the person provides a detailed appearance to you, you can also pass their description along to someone as extra safety. Don’t make appointments as you’re heading to one. In many states now texting or talking on the phone while driving is illegal. Safety is a number one concern, and never let the appeal of saving some time and booking another client on the way to meet another one impede on yours. By all means if you are taking a bus or a subway to meet someone, book away! Keep your phone charged. This is professional courtesy, so when your signer does arrive they can simply call you to find you. It is also never a bad idea for safety reasons or the unthinkable. If you get a flat tire on the way to a signing, at the very least you need to call the signer to inform them you will be late; you may also need your phone to call for help. After a night of signings, talking to someone on the way to your car or having your phone free ready to dial someone is also an extra safety feature. Have an emergency kit handy: Keep an emergency kit in the trunk of your car. You’ll be driving more than most people, and it is never a bad idea to stay prepared. Have a car charger or an extra phone charger in it, jumper cables, a flashlight with batteries, water, food of some kind, rope, a map, hand sanitizer and a blanket. Adjust the list to fit whatever you think you could possibly need. Notary publics travel all over for their jobs, and meet an assortment of people. NPU wants you to stay protected in all ways-- just as you want to take extra steps to decrease your liability while performing notarial acts, you should take extra steps to protect yourself while traveling for work.
